Our Patch

Back

The majority of the symbols on the Blankenship Martial Arts Patch come from the Chinese cosmology (explanation of the universe) in the I-Ching, or Book of Changes.

A the center of the patch is the Yin-Yang, the combined opposites.

Around the circle are the 8 tri-grams. Each tri-gram contains 3 lines, solid or broken. The order of the 8 is not classical, rather, chosen by Master Blankenship to represent the fluid nature of change he wanted for his school (notice as you move in a circle around the tri-grams, a solid line moves from outside to inside, or a broken line moves from outside to inside).

By combining two tri-grams together, a hexigram is created. The 64 rays around the Yin-Yang are for the 64 possible hexigrams.

Inside the Yin-Yang are the symbols for Transformation (upper) and Patience/Perseverance (lower). On the far left are the symbols for Health (upper) and Happiness (lower) and on the far right are Courage/Bravery (upper) and Loyalty (lower).

Center Upper Transformation – Hua(4)
Center Lower Patience, Perseverance – Ren(3)
Left Upper Health – Kang(1)
Left Lower Happiness, Joy – Le(4) or Yue(4) Le(4)
Right Upper Bravery, Courage – Yong(3)
